Enid, when the refugees are settled for the night, goes to ask Mother Giselle about the Maker.
“It is true that the Maker abandoned your—us,” She hurriedly corrects herself. “—twice because we upset him.”
She had heard the stories in vague terms. Either through the mouths of her people lamenting the Chantry doctrine or the believers espousing it when the Lavellan clan and other settlements came to blows. Still, she decides, it would be best from someone who knew the doctrine best and wouldn’t admonish her for it.
Mother Giselle takes Enid’s comment in stride. “The Maker breathed life into us but became disillusioned when humanity turned for the worst. Long years passed before he answered Andraste’s pleas for help, sure that we had learned better.”
“But ‘we’ hadn’t because she was burned at the stake?”
“If we are willing to burn those who follow the call of the divine, then we have not learned.”
Hearing it from Mother Giselle leaves a bitter taste in her mouth. Old criticism leveled by the Keeper of her clan springs to mind, but she swallows them back.
“But Andraste, even when murdered and whisked away to the Maker’s side, encourages reconciliation. She has faith in all of us to become better, do better, and in turn, we have faith in her.” The Revered Mother takes Enid’s scarred palm into her hand, holding it as if holy. “This is proof enough.”
Enid isn’t sure if she agrees.
